A US military B-52 bomber crashed on Monday evening (Israel time) at Edwards Air Force Base in California, just minutes after taking off.
Images showing thick smoke rising from the crash site were published by American media outlets and on social media.
The United States Air Force later officially confirmed that all eight crew members aboard the bomber were killed in the crash. The victims included government civilian employees, contractors, and military personnel.
Preliminary investigative findings revealed that the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff during a routine test mission designed to support the bomber’s radar systems upgrade program.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, and due to severe damage inflicted on the runway, all flight operations at the base have been temporarily suspended.
Edwards Air Force Base had earlier issued a statement saying that it is believed all eight personnel on board the bomber were killed.
“An Air Force B-52 Stratofortress carrying eight people on a routine test mission crashed today shortly after take-off at 11:20 a.m. (PDT). Initial indications are that the crash was not survivable. Emergency response personnel are on scene, and officials are working to account for all personnel,” the statement said, adding, “The crash is currently under investigation.”
